Hi, my name is Sarah from Princess Bride Diamonds, and I am going to be talking about the differences between moissanites and diamonds.
Moissanite has been exploding in popularity this year, and we predict the trend will continue into the future. First here is some background on Moissanite. Moissanites are a lab-created alternative to diamonds and are sometimes confused with lab-created diamonds. The two are completely different minerals, while diamond is 100% Carbon, moissanite is a compound of silicon and carbon, known as silicon carbide or carborundum. Moissanites have a similar yet distinct appearance to diamond. They exhibit a property known as birefringence which is how we can tell the difference between moissanite and diamond.Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral, but it is extremely rare to find. Moissanite has been synthetically produced since its discovery in 1893 by Henri Moissan.
Now for the Comparison
Before scrolling down try to guess which stone is the diamond. The answer is below
A carat is a unit of weight used to measure diamonds, moissanites and gemstones. There are 200mg = 1ct, and 100 points = 1ct. Moissanites are lighter and not as dense as diamonds. When shopping for moissanite, you will typically shop by the length x width of the stone not the carat weight. For example, if you want a round moissanite that looks like a 2 carat round diamond, you will want to shop for an 8mm stone. The moissanite will weigh 1.90ct, and the diamond will weigh 2ct, but they will have the same measurements.
When a diamond is chemically and structurally perfect, there is no hue or color. A diamond exhibits different colors when there are chemical impurities or structural defects in the crystal lattice. Color is graded on a scale of D-Z for both moissanites and diamonds. When shopping for Moissanite we recommend choosing a Charles and Colvard forever one because these stones are going to be equivalent to a D-F color diamond. If you match the color in moissanite and diamond, it is very comparable.
The clarity is how clean a gemstone is on the inside. Diamonds are available in the clarity range from flawless to included (FL-I), and moissanite is available exclusively in the very slightly included (VS1-VS2) range.
This is the characteristic that makes Moissanite a very attractive center stone option. Moissanite will typically be a 1/10th the price of a diamond of the same quality.
